Hypercalcemia of Malignancy
Diagnosis
Hypercalcemia of malignancy is diagnosed by a blood test that measures calcium levels. Normal levels of serum calcium are in the range of 8.0 to 10.8 mg/dL (2.0 to 2.7 mmol/L).
Because hypercalcemia of malignancy is often related to excessive bone destruction that causes the release of calcium into the blood, serum and urine tests that measure products of bone destruction may also be performed. These tests provide useful surrogate markers to assess the extent of disease as well as response to therapy.
